If you are feeling overwhelmed with your life at the moment and everything is getting on top of you, it may be helpful to just take a moment to take time out and stop what you are doing. This is something that I feel is really important, to give your head space and reduce the noise and chaos. Of course it is good to deal with your issues by talking them through and tackling them a little at a time. However, it is much easier when you have a clearer mind and this is something we often forget to do.
Take time out:
Get outdoors for a walk or just sit in the garden. look around you - what can you see, hear, feel, touch and taste?
You could try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique:
5 things you can see - eg the sky, trees or your hands
4 things you can feel - eg feet on the ground
3 things you can hear - children playing, the wind blowing
2 things you can smell - coffee, fresh cut grass
1 thing you can taste - the fresh air, something that you are eating or drinking
Notice what you are doing and how you are doing it, without judgement or expectation.
Breathing technique:
Breathing helps to refocus out of your head and into your bodily awareness in the present moment.
4-4-6
Breath in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 and out slowly for 6
Connecting to your creativity:
Doing something that your enjoy, helps you to reconnect to your inner flow of experience. This may be gardening, listening to or playing music, writing your feelings down in a journal or baking a cake.
Tackling your jobs or things that you need to do:
Maybe you have been avoiding things that need to be done and this is piling up, getting on top of you and making you feel stuck. Try to tackle your to do list one thing or one day at a time. Doing can be therapeutic and I know that this is very difficult when you are feeling overwhelmed. Try to be gentle with yourself, this is often your body trying to keep safe, take care of itself and recharge following a period of overwhelm.
When you have practiced taking time out and feeling more connected to your inner flow, you can become more familiar with how it feels again. You can then become more able to tackle those overwhelming jobs by taking the renewed feelings of connection and being in the moment with you in your doing.
